Cat Rescue Mallorca – What to do?

Today (21st August 2023) – we took the 3 week old kitten whose mother had abandoned in the reeds at the side of our field to the vet as he had been happily ‘thriving’ on the baby cat food that Canis had advised us to feed him and then suddenly he was ‘not so playful’ and ‘not eating as much’.

Red Flags for sure… but we are not ‘Cat Professionals’ so at 11pm we Googled the symptoms and decided to ‘wait until the morning’ …. A ‘fateful decision’ that I hope anyone reading this will learn from…

After reading about Kittens in general – 20% of all kitten litters ‘die’ for many reasons, so to actually get your Kitten through to Adult life is an achievement in itself, whether stray or purchased.

Our Kitten ‘Leo’ who gave us 8 days of absolute joy and love had a bladder issue, we know this because of our emergency trip this morning at 5am to the vet who explained that his bladder was blocked and when the vet finally released him, he died in her hands…

If we had got there the night before ‘maybe he would have survived’ – who knows, as he had a ‘bladder issue’ … because he was only 3 weeks old and his immune system was not fully in place yet and he hadn’t had the start that he would have had with his ‘Mum’…..

So now we are left with 2 remaining Kittens that we found abandoned (from the same litter) in our garden 7 days after we had found Leo.

We managed to catch them and they are terrified and clinging to each other for ‘life’ … literally.

After Leo passing I panicked and realised ‘we are not Cat professionals’ – so who are on the island of Mallorca?

Where do you go when you find a litter of kittens or a stray cat in need?

My experience has been ‘telling’ to say the least…..

As a ‘charity’ you can accept donations ‘often hefty’ as companies have ‘tax relief’ for doing so and yet you can be an Animal Charity with about 10 animals and then turn down the rest… but still take donations?

On my ‘Cat Journey’ – I won’t mention names here, but I’ve been turned down flat … ‘we don’t accept cats’ said one, that advertises that they are a ‘dog and cat and other animals’ sanctuary all over Mallorca… So I asked ‘as a sanctuary – can you advise me then?’ – the abrupt response was ‘I don’t have a list of cat associations. I would have to search the same as you would.’

You would have thought that the ‘hefty donations’ they receive would have paid for at least a list of alternate help if they were turning people down…. obviously not….

And most others ‘simply don’t have room’ …

So what do you do?

Cat Rescue Mallorca  – What to Do …

The most helpful person was ‘Stacy’ from ‘Rancho Fino Mallorca’… she advised of individuals on the island that would maybe be able to take the cats on for us and she was full of helpful advice.  You can find her details on the Rancho Fino Mallorca page.

Canis advised us that if we wanted to leave the kittens with them they would look after them and try to find a home for them. If they did not find a home then they would hand them to a Government run Animal Shelter such as Son Reus. However … as they are ‘so tiny and so young’ the chances of survival within this kind of centre were very low as they could not dedicate the time to them.

So here is our choice…. take them to the vet and hope for the best or look after them ourselves even though we already have a large dog and an indoor rescue cat as we live near a road…..

On behalf of Leo we are going to do our best with the two remaining ones and just pray they pull through and then decide how to ‘make the situation work’ at home….

But for those of you that this isn’t possible, I would suggest taking the Kittens (only if abandoned) that you find to Canis who are ‘vets’ so whilst the kittens are young they are in ‘Professional Hands’ and then ask Canis to be ‘kept informed’ of what happens to them so that you can advertise them on your own Facebook page and try to find homes for them if they cannot.
